No bodies were shown to me.

Marcel returned then with cocoa, a blanket, and the ledger box.

His hands were shaking enough that the cups rattled on the tray.

I opened the old nursery ledger to the week of the fire.

At the top was a room no bigger than a decent hotel pantry.

A stack of folded nurse uniforms.

Juliette was in the bed.

“Victor is selling the east wing,” she said. “That means he’s either paying debts or cleaning records. Either way, he wants every trace gone.”

She reached beneath the mattress and pulled out a canvas folder.

Inside were photocopies of the original trust papers.
Victor’s forged debt transfers.
A statement Agnes wrote and had notarized in secret.
And, most damning of all, the uncashed insurance draft filed the morning after the fire—before any official death assessment could have been completed.

He never expected me to see it.

He never expected Rosalie to survive long enough to carry the glove back through his own front door.

The Hotel That Was Never His

Victor was in the ballroom when I returned.

Of course he was.

Smiling.
Hosting.
Supervising a winter charity auction beneath the chandelier my grandfather imported from Prague after the war.

The room quieted the moment I entered.

Because Rosalie came in holding my hand.

“Can we take it home?” she asked.

Because the smallest things often tell the truth first.
