In the late summer of 1944, Mattoon, Illinois was a town running on wartime rhythms. Shift workers cycled through the Atlas Imperial Decorating Company and the Chicago Ordnance District. Windows stayed open against the August heat. Families listened to radio updates and rationed what they could.

On the night of August 31, a woman named Aline Kearney told police she had smelled something sweet and sickening near her bedroom window. Her legs felt numb. She called for help. Within days, the Mattoon Daily Gazette had a headline. Within two weeks, dozens of residents had filed similar reports.

The Mattoon incidents are a documented cluster of reports—real people, real police logs, real newspaper coverage. What investigators did not find was a verified gassing device, a recovered chemical sample, or an identified attacker. The case sits in a category that social scientists would later study carefully: a reported event whose physical cause remains unconfirmed, whose spread followed the shape of a media-amplified scare, and whose witnesses were neither fabricating nor, in all likelihood, poisoned by a coordinated human source.

What Witnesses Reported

The initial reports shared a consistent pattern. Residents described a sweetish or floral odor entering through open windows at night. Common symptoms included nausea, leg weakness, a burning sensation in the mouth or throat, and in some cases vomiting. A smaller number reported brief glimpses of a figure or a spray device near a window, though none of these accounts produced a corroborating witness or physical trace.

Aline Kearney’s August 31 report is generally cited as the first documented complaint in this cluster. Between September 1 and September 13, Mattoon police logged approximately twenty-five to thirty distinct complaints. The reports came from different addresses across the town but concentrated in the older residential neighborhoods near the southeastern side. Most occurred in the evening or overnight hours. Nearly all involved open windows.

The symptom descriptions were real in the sense that witnesses believed them and in some cases sought medical attention. What cannot be established from the surviving record is whether those symptoms had a shared external chemical cause, an anxiety response to credible threat reporting, or some combination of ordinary environmental odor and heightened physical awareness. The complaints were documented. Their cause was not.

After September 13, the reports dropped sharply. Police logged only scattered follow-up calls. No further incident matched the intensity or frequency of the two-week cluster. The Gasser, as the press had named the presumed attacker, did not return—or had never existed in the form the headlines described.

The shape of that timeline—rapid onset, concentrated geography, steep decline after official skepticism increased—would later become central to how researchers read the case.

The paper’s September 1 story introduced the “Mad Gasser” framing before investigators had examined more than one complaint. Subsequent issues named the event repeatedly, ran witness quotes and encouraged readers with similar experiences to come forward. Researchers who later reviewed the newspaper archive found that the volume and specificity of coverage accelerated sharply in the days immediately following the first headline—and that the geographic spread of complaints correlated with areas of higher readership.

That correlation is not proof of media causation. It is an observable pattern that later social scientists found significant. Donald Johnson, a University of Illinois sociologist, examined the Mattoon case in a 1945 paper published in the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology. Johnson argued that the case fit the profile of what he called “imaginary” or suggestion-driven illness—not in the sense that witnesses invented their experiences, but that no evidence supported an external chemical source and the spread followed social rather than physical pathways.

Johnson’s interpretation was contested at the time and has been revisited since. It remains the earliest formal social-scientific analysis of the event and the first to use the case as a framework for understanding how reported symptoms can propagate through a community under stress.

What Investigators Examined

Local police conducted door-to-door canvasses in the affected neighborhoods. They found no device and no suspect. The FBI field office reviewed the complaints briefly given the wartime context—a chemical attacker in a home-front town carried obvious national-security implications—and did not escalate the investigation. No federal charge was filed.

Health officials pointed to two nearby industrial sources as possible contributors to ambient odor. The Atlas Imperial Decorating Company, located within a mile of several complaint addresses, used carbon tetrachloride and other solvents in its manufacturing processes. A second facility, associated with wartime production, also operated in the area. Neither was conclusively linked to the specific nights and addresses of the complaints, but investigators noted that prevailing winds and open windows could carry industrial odors significant distances.

The Leading Explanation

The wartime context matters specifically. Mattoon’s residents in August 1944 were saturated with civil-defense messaging about chemical attack. Gas masks had been distributed. The media amplification mechanism that Johnson identified in 1945 has since been studied across dozens of similar cases. The term now used in the clinical literature is mass psychogenic illness—a pattern in which real symptoms, experienced genuinely, spread through a group via suggestion, anxiety and social cues rather than through shared physical exposure. The symptoms are not faked. The shared cause is social rather than chemical.

This explanation is supported by the timeline’s shape, the absence of physical evidence, the geographic correlation with readership, and the rapid cessation of reports after official skepticism increased. It is consistent with what health investigators documented in September 1944 and with the broader scientific literature on similar events.

Its limitation is that it cannot be proven in the strict sense. No one collected a baseline air sample before the first complaint. Industrial odors from nearby facilities remain a plausible partial contributor to the first report or reports. The possibility that a small number of early incidents involved a genuine environmental irritant—which the newspaper then amplified into a perceived attacker—cannot be eliminated from the available record.

The Detail That Still Does Not Fit

The leading explanation handles the cluster, the timeline and the cessation well. What it handles less cleanly is the first report.

Aline Kearney’s August 31 account predates the newspaper coverage that researchers credit with amplifying subsequent complaints. If the mass-psychogenic model requires a media trigger, the earliest incident sits outside that mechanism. Her husband’s corroborating odor report that same night similarly precedes the public framing.

One reading is that the first incident involved a genuine environmental odor—industrial, household, or naturally occurring—and that the Gazette‘s decision to frame it as an attacker story transformed subsequent ordinary sensory experiences into reports of assault. Under this reading, no one was gassed and no attacker existed, but something did enter through a window on August 31 that had a real, if mundane, source.

A second reading is that the Kearney report itself was influenced by pre-existing anxiety and the ordinary odor environment of a wartime industrial town—that no special first-night event is required to explain what followed.

Neither reading has been settled by the available evidence. The absence of a sample from the first night is the same evidentiary gap that limits the entire case. It means the most careful conclusion is also a bounded one: the cluster is best explained by psychogenic amplification of ambient odors, but the origin of the first complaint remains an open point in the record.

How the Event Entered Strange History

In popular culture, the story moved in a different direction. True-crime and paranormal treatments kept the Mad Gasser as a character—a mysterious figure who evaded capture, possibly a lone chemist, possibly connected to something larger. Books published decades after the events reconstructed a suspect and a motive from circumstantial detail. None of these reconstructions produced authenticated evidence that had not been available to investigators in 1944.

Scott Maruna’s 2003 book The Mad Gasser of Mattoon proposed a specific suspect—a local eccentric with chemistry knowledge—but the identification rested on inference rather than recovered physical evidence. It illustrates a recurring feature of unsolved cases: the human impulse to close a file that official investigators left open. The Mattoon record does not support a named attacker. It does support the conclusion that the search for one was itself part of what the case became.

The town of Mattoon is aware of its place in this history. The case appears in university curricula on social psychology and epidemic behavior. It is cited in textbooks as an early American example of documented mass psychogenic illness—not as a ghost story, but as a case study in how fear, media and community interact under stress.

The File on the Mad Gasser

The Mattoon incidents of September 1944 are real in every documentary sense. Police logged the complaints. Newspapers named the attacker. Health officials investigated. Witnesses described genuine physical experiences. None of that is in dispute.

What the record does not support is a verified human attacker, a recovered chemical agent, or a deliberate poisoning campaign. The best-supported explanation—developed from the original investigative record, the newspaper archive and subsequent social-science research—is that ordinary ambient odors in a wartime industrial town were encountered by anxious residents, framed as assault by newspaper coverage, and then spread through a community primed to believe the threat was real.

That explanation is not certain. The first report sits at the edge of it. The absence of baseline environmental data from August 1944 means the industrial-odor component cannot be fully measured. What can be said with confidence is this: no evidence gathered at the time or since requires a human attacker to explain what Mattoon reported.

The open windows are the enduring image. A hot summer night, a strange smell crossing a sill, a town already listening for danger. Whatever crossed those windowsills in 1944, it left no sample behind—only the shape of how a scare moves through a community that has been taught to be afraid.
