Camp Century Was Real—The Missile Network Beneath Greenland Was Not Completed

In 1960, the United States Army announced that it had built a working town beneath the Greenland ice sheet. There were living quarters, a chapel, a library, a hospital ward, and a nuclear reactor. The Army called it Camp Century and described it as a research station—a platform for cold-weather science and polar engineering. The press photographs showed soldiers eating hot meals in tunnels carved through ice more than a hundred feet underground. It looked like science fiction made real.

What the public presentations did not describe was a parallel study running alongside the construction. That study asked a different question: whether the same ice sheet could hide not a research camp, but several thousand nuclear missiles distributed across a tunnel network the size of a small country.

Camp Century was designed to test whether any of that math was achievable in practice. If the camp could sustain a crew through an Arctic winter using a portable nuclear reactor, if tunnels could be cut and maintained at the required depth, and if equipment could be moved through sub-zero corridors without failing, then a much larger network might follow. The camp was, in that sense, an engineering audition for the missile program rather than a self-contained research effort.

The political geography created an additional layer of complexity. Greenland is Danish sovereign territory. The 1951 Defense Agreement between Denmark and the United States permitted American military operations on the island, but Denmark maintained a formal policy against nuclear weapons on its territory. The core documents describing Project Iceworm were produced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and associated planning offices in the early 1960s. They circulated within the military at a classification level that kept them from public view for decades. When they were eventually released, the picture they presented was of a serious feasibility study, not a construction program.

The planning documents described a tunnel network eventually projected to cover approximately 52,000 square miles beneath the ice sheet. The concept called for around 2,500 miles of tunnels connecting 600 missile emplacements capable of holding Medium Range Ballistic Missiles. The system was intended to be mobile within that network—launchers moving along underground rail lines so that their positions could never be precisely fixed by Soviet intelligence.

What the documents also recorded, with increasing concern across successive reports, was that the ice was not cooperative. Greenland’s ice sheet is not static. It flows outward toward the coasts under its own weight. Tunnels cut into the ice deform. Roofs sag. Walls close inward. The engineers at Camp Century documented this process in detail as they maintained the camp’s existing corridors. The deformation rates they measured were faster than the original planning assumptions had allowed. The Army’s own assessments concluded that maintaining a tunnel network large enough to operate a mobile missile force would require continuous and enormously expensive re-excavation. Camp Century itself was declassified in stages. The existence of the nuclear reactor—designated PM-2A, a portable model developed specifically for remote installations—became publicly known while the camp was still operating. A Danish researcher working in the 1990s brought renewed attention to documents that clarified the relationship between the camp and the larger proposal, and the Danish government subsequently commissioned its own historical review of what had been shared between the two countries during the camp’s operational period.

Camp Century was constructed beginning in 1959 and reached operational status in 1960. At its peak it housed approximately 200 military personnel. The camp was closed in 1966. It was not demolished. The structures, the equipment that had not been removed, the chemical and radioactive waste generated during six years of operations, and eventually the reactor’s own contaminated components that had not been fully extracted were left in place. The assumption at the time was that the ice would bury everything permanently and that the material would remain entombed beneath the sheet indefinitely.

That assumption has been complicated by subsequent climate science. Researchers have estimated that the site contains roughly 200,000 liters of diesel fuel, 240,000 liters of wastewater, and low-level radioactive material from reactor operations. As the Greenland ice sheet loses mass under current warming trends, modeling studies have suggested that the buried waste could be exposed within the present century. How the Secret Became Public: Declassification and Danish Response

The gap between what Camp Century presented publicly and what Project Iceworm proposed strategically became a formal diplomatic matter after Danish historians and journalists examined the released documents in detail. In 1997, the Danish Institute of International Affairs produced a report examining American nuclear policy in Greenland. The report found that the Danish government had been kept in the dark about significant elements of American strategic planning on Danish territory.

The Danish government’s response was measured but serious. Officials acknowledged that the 1951 Defense Agreement had been interpreted differently by the two parties and that the American side had not fully disclosed the nuclear dimensions of its Greenland operations. The 1968 crash of a B-52 carrying nuclear weapons near Thule Air Base had already created one major diplomatic incident. Claims the Evidence Does Not Support

The most persistent is that operational nuclear missiles were deployed beneath the Greenland ice and remain there today. The tunnels that existed were Camp Century’s maintenance and living corridors, not missile emplacements. The documentary record does not support this.
