The Manuscript Is Authentic—But No One Can Read Its Script

It sits in a climate-controlled vault at Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, catalogued as MS 408. The vellum pages are soft with age. The ink has settled into the skin of the pages the way old ink does—slightly uneven, organic, real. Whoever held a pen over this material did so sometime in the early to mid-fifteenth century, according to radiocarbon analysis of the parchment itself.

The illustrations are precise and strange. Botanical drawings show plants that do not correspond clearly to any identified species. Circular diagrams suggest astronomical or calendrical systems. Rows of small human figures appear in pools connected by elaborate tubes. And running through every section—across every margin, alongside every image—is a script that no verified translation has ever cracked.

This is Beinecke MS 408, commonly known as the Voynich Manuscript. The object is genuine. The materials are consistent with fifteenth-century European production. What the text means, who wrote it, and whether it encodes a real language, a cipher, or something else entirely remain open questions with no accepted answer.

The First Surviving Record

The manuscript’s documented history begins in 1912, when Wilfrid Voynich—a Polish-American rare-book dealer—reported purchasing it from the Jesuit library at the Villa Mondragone in Frascati, Italy. Voynich recognized its unusual character immediately and began attempting to attract scholarly attention to it. He died in 1930 without seeing it decoded.

What Voynich also found inside the manuscript was a letter dated 1666, written by Johannes Marcus Marci—a Bohemian physician and rector of Charles University in Prague—to the Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher. Marci’s letter described the book as having once belonged to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, who reportedly purchased it for 600 gold ducats. The letter mentioned that Rudolf believed the manuscript to be the work of Roger Bacon, the thirteenth-century English friar known for his interest in natural philosophy and cryptography.

The Marci letter is the earliest surviving document that can be tied to the manuscript’s identity. It does not confirm Bacon’s authorship—Marci himself wrote that he could not verify the attribution. Radiocarbon dating conducted by the University of Arizona in 2009 placed the vellum’s production between approximately 1404 and 1438, which is inconsistent with Bacon’s lifetime in the thirteenth century. The Bacon theory, while historically persistent, is not supported by the material evidence.

Before Marci’s letter, the manuscript’s history is undocumented. A faint inscription on the final folio has been tentatively read as “Jacobi de Tepenec,” possibly referring to Jakub Hořčický, an imperial distiller who held the title Sinapius and served Rudolf II’s court. If that reading is correct, it would place the manuscript in Prague in the early seventeenth century. But the inscription is partially erased and the attribution remains uncertain.

The manuscript passed from Voynich’s estate to book dealer Hans Kraus, who donated it to Yale’s Beinecke Library in 1969, where it has remained accessible to researchers ever since. Yale’s catalogue entry designates it as MS 408 and makes high-resolution scans available to the public through the Beinecke Digital Collections. The chain of ownership before the Marci letter cannot be reconstructed from surviving documents.

What the Original Evidence Actually Shows

Material analysis offers the clearest verified facts about the manuscript. The 2009 radiocarbon study, conducted at the University of Arizona’s accelerator mass spectrometry laboratory, dated four vellum samples to the early fifteenth century. The study was published in a peer-reviewed context and is the foundation of current scholarly consensus on the manuscript’s age.

Subsequent analysis by researchers at the McCrone Research Institute examined the inks and pigments. The findings were broadly consistent with the fifteenth-century date, though ink analysis for manuscripts presents additional complexity because ink can be applied to older vellum. No evidence emerged suggesting the vellum was artificially aged or the ink anachronistic to the fifteenth century.

The manuscript contains approximately 240 vellum pages organized into thematic sections: botanical illustrations, astronomical and astrological diagrams, biological drawings featuring the bathing figures, a cosmological section, pharmaceutical drawings, and pages of dense text accompanied by plant-like imagery. The sections are recognized by scholars as structurally distinct but internally consistent in script and visual style.

The script itself has received extensive statistical attention. It is written left to right, with apparent word boundaries, consistent letter forms, and statistical regularities that distinguish it from random character generation. The text shows patterns consistent with natural language—including something resembling a Zipf distribution in word frequencies, a relationship found in human languages. It also has unusual features: an extremely low entropy compared to most European languages, a restricted character set of somewhere between twenty and thirty distinct glyphs, and a near-absence of two-letter combinations common in European writing. These statistical properties are documented. What they mean for the text’s origin remains the subject of genuine scholarly disagreement.

How the Decipherment Attempts Changed the Story

The manuscript attracted serious codebreakers long before it reached Yale. During World War II, American cryptanalysts including William Friedman—who led the team that broke Japan’s PURPLE cipher—worked on the text and did not produce a solution. Friedman later suggested the manuscript might encode an artificial philosophical language, though he did not publish a complete theory.

In the decades since, dozens of proposed solutions have appeared in academic papers, books and press releases. A partial list illustrates the range: proto-Romance language, an early form of Ukrainian, a constructed language with vowels omitted, a shorthand system, a series of herbal remedies encoded for secrecy, an astrological almanac, and a hoax designed to defraud Rudolf II. More recently, computational linguists and AI researchers have applied machine-learning methods to the text. Several announced partial translations that did not survive independent review.

In 2004, Gordon Rugg, a researcher at Keele University, proposed that the manuscript could have been produced using a simple Cardan grille—a card with cut-out windows moved across a table of syllables to generate pseudo-text. Rugg’s model demonstrated that the statistical properties of the Voynich text could be replicated by this method, which he argued supported a hoax hypothesis. Critics noted that his model could not account for all the text’s linguistic regularities and that demonstrating a possible method of forgery does not establish that forgery occurred.

In 2019, a team of researchers led by Greg Kondrak at the University of Alberta applied AI-based language identification tools and suggested an underlying language related to Hebrew with specific vowel omissions. The announcement received wide press coverage. Independent linguists noted that the proposed translations of sample sentences did not produce coherent meaning and that the methodology had significant limitations when applied to an unverified script.

No proposed solution has passed independent scholarly verification. The Voynich Studies community—an informal network of academic and independent researchers—maintains a record of major claims and their current status. As of the available scholarly record, no decipherment is accepted.

The Strongest Current Explanations

Three explanations currently receive the most serious scholarly attention, and none can be dismissed or confirmed on the available evidence.

The first is that the manuscript encodes a meaningful text—a real language, a constructed language, or a shorthand system—using methods not yet identified. This explanation draws support from the text’s statistical regularities, its apparent internal structure, and the manuscript’s material authenticity. Its weakness is that no proposed decoding method has produced verified readable content.

The second is that the manuscript is a sophisticated hoax, most likely produced for sale to a wealthy patron such as Rudolf II. This explanation accounts for the absence of any known key, the text’s unusual statistical properties, and the historical context of a period when learned forgeries were not unknown. Its weakness is that the level of consistency across 240 pages would represent an extraordinary investment of effort for a purely deceptive purpose, and the Cardan grille model does not fully replicate all observed text patterns.

The third, less widely held but occasionally proposed by linguists, is that the text is a form of glossolalia or an idiosyncratic notation system created by a single author for purposes that made no reference to an external language at all—a kind of private symbolic record. This explanation is difficult to test because it predicts that no external key would exist.

Each theory carries assumptions. Each faces evidence it does not fully explain. The radiocarbon date rules out medieval fabrications from much earlier periods and rules out Bacon. It does not rule out a fifteenth-century hoax, a fifteenth-century cipher, or a fifteenth-century language.

What Cannot Be Verified

The gap between what the material evidence establishes and what any theory requires is the honest core of the Voynich problem. The vellum date is verified. The script’s statistical properties are documented. The manuscript’s ownership history from Marci’s letter forward is traceable. Everything before 1666—and the text’s meaning—remains outside the reach of current evidence.

The Rudolf II attribution rests entirely on Marci’s 1666 letter, which was itself reporting second-hand information about events from decades earlier. Marci acknowledged uncertainty in the letter itself. No independent sixteenth-century document confirms Rudolf’s purchase or names the manuscript’s author.

The botanical illustrations have attracted particular attention. Some researchers have proposed identifications with specific plants used in herbal medicine, pointing to possible Old World or New World origins for the depicted species. No botanical identification has been accepted across the field. The plants may be stylized, composite, or imaginary.

The astronomical diagrams have been compared to zodiacal illustrations in other fifteenth-century manuscripts. Some correspondences are visually suggestive. None has produced a decoded section of text. The bathing figures have been interpreted as medical, alchemical, astrological and cosmological in different studies, without consensus.

Any claim to have translated the manuscript—whether published as a book, presented in a press release or generated by an AI tool—should be evaluated against a simple standard: does the proposed method produce verified, coherent, reproducible meaning from the text? To date, no such claim has met that standard under independent review.

Why the Story Has Survived

The Voynich Manuscript occupies a specific kind of cultural position. It is not rumored to exist—it is in a library, photographed at full resolution, available online. What the evidence establishes is a genuine fifteenth-century manuscript written in an unidentified script by an unknown author for an unknown purpose, held at Yale, and still unread. The question of whether that script encodes a language, a cipher, or a carefully constructed nothing remains, as of the current scholarly record, unanswered. That is not a dramatic conclusion. It is simply where the evidence stops—and where it has stopped for everyone who has tried before.
