Songwriters Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman originally brought “I’m Not in Love” to their bandmates as something closer to a bossa nova arrangement — a lighter, rhythmically buoyant piece with a more conventional feel. The goal was to accumulate enough raw vocal material that, when played together, the result would sound less like individuals singing and more like a living tonal atmosphere — something the ear could not quite pin to a single voice or a single moment.

The emotional fragility of the song, the sense of someone insisting on an emotional distance they cannot quite maintain, needed a sound that felt both enormous and somehow uncertain. The choir-that-wasn’t-a-choir was the answer. By the time all the individual notes had been committed to tape, the studio was holding something genuinely new. The question was how to use it.

Those recordings were then transferred onto tape loops — lengths of tape physically spliced into continuous circles so they could run and repeat indefinitely without the sound stopping. Each loop held the sustained vocal texture for a single note. The loops were loaded throughout the studio, running over microphone stands, around pencils, across whatever structure was available to keep the tape moving smoothly. The studio floor became a kind of mechanical web of slowly circling tape.

Building the Long Tape Loops

The physical reality of those tape loops is one of the more vivid details in the story of this recording. Magnetic recording tape is not designed to be spliced into a loop and run for an extended period across improvised guides. The loops had to be long enough that the repeated cycle would not become audible as a loop — the ear needed to hear continuous, uninterrupted sound, not a rhythmic repetition. Running those loops through the studio required creative engineering. The tape had to move at consistent speed without snagging, stretching, or losing tension.
