The Woman on the Bench
The snow was light at first.
Not enough to frighten people indoors. Just enough to turn the sidewalks pale and soften the city into something quieter than it really was. My daughter walked beside me in her yellow coat, one mitten wrapped around the paper bag of pastries I had just bought her, the other tucked into my hand.
We were halfway past the bus stop when Lucy stopped walking.
I almost tugged her forward without looking.

Then I saw the woman on the bench.
She was young, though the cold had done its best to make her look older. Her coat was torn at one elbow. Her shoes were gone.
